Community of Chemainus

Chemainus is a community on the southern east coast of Vancouver Island, just south of Nanaimo, Ladysmith and North of the major city of Victoria.  Founded in 1858 as an unincorporated logging town, Chemainus is now famous for its 39 outdoor murals.  The name Chemainus comes from the native shaman and prophet "Tsa-meeun-is" meaning broken chest.  There is a BC ferry terminal located in Chemainus, which provides service to Thetis Island and Penelakut Island.
